Where is disgraced TV host Matt Lauer now? 6 years after his firing from NBC’s Today show for sexual misconduct – mirrored in Jennifer Aniston’s The Morning Show – will he ever return to showbiz?

- For the first time since his exit, Lauer publicly reunited with former NBC colleagues Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie at a producer’s wedding in New York City
- He’s ‘iced out’ many of his old celebrity friends, got divorced from his model wife Annette Roque after his affairs came to light, but is now dating Shamin Abas
As the #MeToo movement continued across the film and TV industries, allegations against long-time anchor Matt Lauer left the world shocked.
The incident is believed to have partly inspired TV drama series The Morning Show, which stars Steve Carrell as a beloved anchor who is suddenly fired.

In November 2023, a source told People magazine that Lauer had “drastically changed his social circle” and is currently living “a very quiet lifestyle”. He also attended an NBC producer’s wedding in December 2023, where he encountered former colleagues such as Hoda Kotb and Al Roker for the first time since his firing.
So, what happened to Lauer since the revelations? Here is what we know.
What was Matt Lauer accused of?
The formerly beloved TV personality denied many of the accusations, calling them “untrue or mischaracterised”. He admitted to extramarital affairs – as he was married to his then wife, model Annette Roque, at the time – but insisted they were consensual.
His celebrity friends cut ties with him

After the revelations, some of Lauer’s friends who had been close to him for years decided to drop him en masse. His former colleague Katie Couric said she cut all ties with him, per The Independent: “I think what I realised is that there was a side of Matt I never really knew.” Back in 2019, fellow TV personality Al Roker told Entertainment Tonight, “I don’t really talk about him that much, but we wish him well.”
