We’re all too familiar with nepo babies in Hollywood acting, music and fashion – but what’s it like in the world of publishing?

For Gus Wenner, a natural ability to express the written word apparently runs in the family. The son of Rolling Stone’s co-founder Jann Wenner was appointed CEO of the iconic American culture magazine last January.

But most recently, he’s been making headlines for his love life. Last weekend, the 33-year-old magazine heir was seen walking hand in hand with 25-year-old Hollywood actress and Cartier ambassador Elle Fanning, as per Harper’s Bazaar. Fanning, who’s starred in films such as Disney’s Maleficent and Super 8, confirmed in an interview earlier this year that she was no longer dating her long-time boyfriend Max Minghella.

The couple strolled around New York after enjoying a dinner with singer Lorde, actor Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Gus’ brother Theo Wenner, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

So, who is he exactly?

Gus is the son of Jann Wenner, the co-founder of Rolling Stone, and Jane Schindelheim, who Jann was married to from 1967 to 1995.

Jann reportedly shares three children with his ex-wife – Gus, Theo and Alexander – and three born via surrogate (India, Jude and Noah) with his current partner Matt Nye. According to New York Magazine, Miley Cyrus was romantically linked to Theo in 2013.

He became CEO of Rolling Stone magazine last year

According to Adweek, Gus Wenner has been working at the magazine since 2012, after doing a summer internship in 2007. He reportedly helped orchestrate the 56-year-old media company’s sale to Penske Media Corporation in 2017.

In January 2022, he landed the CEO role at Rolling Stone. He told The Fine Print New York that he now feels like “basically an employee versus ‘my dad owns the company’”.

His dad Jann has some highly controversial views

Gus’ dad Jann found himself at the centre of controversy in September for making a series of disparaging comments about Black and female artists in an interview with The New York Times.

He said that his selection of interviews for his book The Masters, “was not a deliberate selection … insofar as the women, just none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level”.

“Of Black artists – you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as ‘masters’, the fault is using that word,” Wenner added. “Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level.”

He later apologised for his remarks, per The Guardian.

He’s an executive producer

As seen on his Instagram, he does everything from kayaking to horse riding and skiing. He also seems to be friends with fellow nepo babies Carys Zeta Douglas (daughter of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas), who follows him on the platform, and Christie Brinkley’s model daughter Sailor Brinkley Cook, who has commented on his pics. He also reportedly dated Maya Hawke, Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke’s actress daughter, in 2019.
