Since it kicked off on April 12, all eyes have been on the court case between high-profile Hollywood stars and exes, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor is suing his ex-wife for US$50 million for defamation after she wrote a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post. In the article, Heard claimed she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse”.
Meanwhile, Heard is clapping back with a US$100 million lawsuit saying that he in fact defamed her. So far, in what will end up being a six-week trial, Depp alleges that he suffered physical abuse from his then-wife on numerous counts, including a severed finger, and that she once left “human faecal matter” on their bed.
The many recordings of arguments between the duo give just a glimpse of how tormenting the relationship really was. Depp has also accused his ex-wife of cheating on him with several men during their marriage, including Billy Bob Thornton (who denies the allegation), Elon Musk and James Franco, with footage of Franco and Heard together late at night in a lift being released as part of Depp’s defence.
It’s been an ongoing battle between the two since they divorced in 2016. They met on The Rum Diary film set in 2009 and began dating before getting engaged in 2014, according to CNN. They had a private wedding ceremony in 2015, but parted ways after just over a year of marriage.
