Co-sharing space WeWork made headlines after its launch in 2010. Founded by Adam Neumann and Miguel McKelvey, the start-up quickly built up a US$47 billion worth – but it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, especially when its value dropped to US$2.9 billion in 2020.
So what happened? WeWork’s epic rise and fall is portrayed in Apple TV+’s new series WeCrashed starring Jared Leto as Neumann and Anne Hathaway as his wife Rebekah Neumann, the spiritual and strategic driving force behind WeWork. But how has she still maintained her role since the pair left their empire in 2019?
She is still a billionaire’s wife

According to Marie Claire, the pair met in 2007 through university friends and quickly hit it off, getting married in 2008. Although their relationship is relatively private, Rebekah has described her beau as her “soulmate” – but would also oversee the “soul” side of the business, referring to her insistence on wellness in the workplace.
The couple are still together now, meaning they can continue to enjoy their lavish life thanks to Adam’s US$2.3 billion net worth. And lavish it is indeed.

According to The Wall Street Journal, in 2019 they owned six properties worth some US$90 million, including a US$10.5 million town house in New York, a US$15 million 24-hectare (60-acre) estate in Linden Farm and at least two homes in the Hamptons.
However, Adam is now looking to sell some of his properties, including the Gramercy Park residence for US$37.5 million. Additionally, he has been reportedly acquiring majority stakes in more than 4,000 flats valued at more than US$1 billion in the US.

The couple likes to travel in style too. In 2018, Adam bought a two-bedroom Gulfstream G650ER company private jet for US$60 million. It’s since been put on the market for an unspecified price, according to Insider.
She took a long hiatus from Hollywood

Rebekah has famous family members besides her billionaire husband – her cousin is actress and wellness entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow. Rebekah also tried her hand in Hollywood under the stage name Rebekah Keith to play roles in Fair Game, which stars Naomi Watts and Sean Penn; Nomads with Lucy Liu; Awake and Aunt Louisa, a short film. She also helped produce I Origins and Free the Nipple in 2014.

Last year, the couple were invited to an interview on documentary WeWork: Or The Making and Breaking of a US$47 Billion Unicorn, but declined.
She hasn’t given up on her educator and entrepreneurial dream

Under WeWork, WeGrow is a private school that was founded in 2018 by Rebekah with the lofty mission of “unleashing every human’s superpowers”, per Vanity Fair. Costing up to US$42,000 a year, it was based on six pillars of growth including mind, body, soul, conscious creators, arts and nature. Children ate vegetarian meals and learned yoga, meditation, mindfulness, farming and entrepreneurship.

The school was closed in 2019 when Rebekah stepped down from WeWork. However, in 2020, Forbes reported that she bought it back and planned to relaunch it as SOLFL (Student of Life for Life), pronounced “soulful”.

Its revamp will provide “a hyper-localised, Earth-based, holistic approach to teaching and learning”, per SOLFL’s website.
She’s always been a passionate vegan and yogi

The school’s philosophy stems from Rebekah’s personal beliefs and habits as an active vegan and yogi. Besides having a double major in business and Buddhism from Cornell University, she also studied spirituality in India and trained to become a yoga teacher. But Adam swayed her from pursuing it further as he said it was an unlucrative profession, per Esquire.
However, she had an influence on him too. She not only helped him quit smoking and soda, but turned his ambition from chasing money to building WeWork as a business centred on wellness, happiness and fulfilment, according to Fast Company.

“Whether it be meditating for 45 minutes, yoga a few times a week, eating in a clean, healthy way. It’s hard to maximise your potential if you’re not healthy, happy and clear in yourself,” she told Coveteur.
For Anne Hathaway, who plays Rebekah in WeCrashed, yoga and veganism became part of her routine as she applied it to her lifestyle when getting into the role. In an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the Princess Diaries actress said, “I did get very into yoga. And we should do as much as we can to eat vegetables for the environment. We all know that at this point, I hope.”

After WeWork’s collapse, the pair expanded their family with six children, including two sets of twins, per Harper’s Bazaar. They had their first daughter Elle in 2011. But despite living the busy family life, Rebekah somehow manages to balance entrepreneurial ventures with being a mother – but it’s not easy by any means.
“The biggest challenge was balancing between my family, my kids and work. It’s really important, especially for women, to combine the two worlds so that they don’t feel like being a mother somehow takes away from being able to succeed in the workforce,” she told Coveteur. “Kids shouldn’t feel like work is something they’re not allowed to peek into. So, for me, the biggest challenge was being able to bring those two worlds together.”
