  • As Diana’s eldest granddaughter, Charlotte will have the pick of the bunch including the Spencer tiara designed by royal jeweller Garrard
  • There’s also her favourite pearl choker she got for her 18th birthday, pearl drop earrings given by the Emir of Qatar and the emerald set she didn’t like but wore to match other gifts

As Princess Diana of Wales didn’t have any daughters before her untimely death at 36 years old in 1997, many pieces of her jewellery were handed down to her sons, Princes William and Harry, to give to their wives – with many later worn by Kate Middleton.

However certain items are believed to be set aside for Princess Charlotte, daughter of Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Now aged five, she’s older than Diana’s other granddaughter – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s little girl, Lilibet. Here they are.

Lady Diana Spencer wore this piece as her “something borrowed” on her July 29, 1981, wedding day, and also for the nuptials of her older sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

Garrard, who is the royal family’s jeweller, designed the floral and scroll motif diamond tiara around a wedding gift that Lady Sarah Spencer gave to Diana’s grandmother Lady Cynthia Hamilton when she married Viscount Althorp in 1919. Diana was pictured wearing it at a Claridge’s banquet in 1988 and again when she saw the English National Ballet in Budapest in 1992.

Princess Charlotte is reportedly aware of the tiara as she has seen pictures of her “Granny Diana” wearing it and she can’t wait to try it on, according to Australia’s New Idea magazine. Future king William is said to be trying to secure the heirloom from Diana’s younger brother. “William is quite aware the earl has daughters of his own, but the two have agreed that Diana’s iconic piece belongs to her first granddaughter,” a source told GoodToKnow.

2. The pearl choker

Diana’s triple-strand pearl choker, with a flower-shaped clasp, is another favourite piece handed down by the Spencer family that Charlotte may look forward to inheriting one day. Diana received the necklace for her 18th birthday – a tradition in the Spencer family as both of her sisters got similar necklaces. She wore it at Trooping the Colour in 1988 when she stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace holding a young Prince Harry.
