Back in July, Olivia Rodrigo was invited to the White House to encourage young Americans to get their Covid-19 shots. It was a landmark moment that is likely to define the Gen Z pop icon’s public image for years to come – and she definitely didn’t disappoint in the sartorial department, dressing with a reflective maturity far beyond her years.

Because on the sidelines of her high-profile meeting with President Joe Biden, Vice-President Kamala Harris (something of a fashion icon herself) and White House chief medical adviser Dr Anthony Fauci, it was the 18-year-old’s fashion choices that were perhaps most widely discussed.

Rodrigo sported a vintage Chanel tweed suit from 1995, a fashion staple favoured by many American first ladies including Jacqueline Kennedy, accessorised with some Justine Clenquet earrings, white Giuseppe Zanotti platform heels and – a youthful touch – a pair of black crew socks.

The Good 4 U hitmaker also channelled the latest fashion phenomenon of mini bags with a tiny black Amina Muaddi purse.

This was a classic fashion power play. The soft palette of eye-popping pink, black and white exuded youth and amiability, while also bringing an elegance appropriate for the occasion.
