K-pop, like any industry, has its fair share of tough unwritten rules that idols have to comply with – or else face the wrath of fans, managers and the public at large. Behind the photogenic looks, impeccably choreographed dance routines, and top-notch vocals are a set of standards that idols must live by and epitomise.
But, as the saying goes, rules are meant to be broken. Despite the public scrutiny, some idols have gone against the tide to be true to themselves, while others came under fire for their behaviour.

Fans hold artists to a high regard and prefer it when idols are single. Entertainment companies even include a “no dating” clause in their trainee contracts. However, stars naturally break this rule.
Last year, Exo’s Chen announced he was in a relationship with his pregnant girlfriend and planned to get married. Fans were not all quick to celebrate this momentous occasion – many even demanding that he leave the group.
In 2018, when artists Hyuna and E’Dawn revealed they were dating, they faced backlash from brokenhearted fans, and even left their recording label, Cube Entertainment, later rebooting their careers simultaneously with Psy’s P Nation.
