  • Ella Emhoff stood out in a sea of monochrome looks and block colours at the 2021 presidential inauguration rocking a bedazzled Miu Miu coat
  • The Parsons School of Design student and knitwear nut became a viral Instagram star overnight for her whimsical The Simpsons-inspired designs

The inauguration of Joe Biden not only ushered in a new era in US politics, but also highlighted the best of American fashion and style. This year’s inauguration was historic and symbolic; the celebrations were reduced to a socially distanced, televised and virtual medium due to the threats posed by the coronavirus outbreak. Fashion became the strongest visual cue, and people paid attention to the message it sent more than ever.
The event saw politicians and celebrities garbed in their best designer outfits – the return of fashion diplomacy to Washington – all filled with symbolic meanings. Among these VIPs, one especially stood out: Vice-President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff.

Emhoff’s outfit – a burgundy Batsheva dress worn underneath a Miu Miu coat encrusted with crystals – and her playful on-camera eyebrow waggling immediately went viral. Aside from the positive reception she received for her outfit, what else is there to know about Harris’ 22-year-old stepdaughter with husband Doug Emhoff?

She already had style

The Miu Miu ensemble is just one of the ever-growing list of outfits Emhoff can pull off. According to Fashionista, the day before the inauguration, she wore a full Thom Browne suit to a ceremony honouring the 400,000 American lives lost to Covid-19. She was styled by duo Jill and Jordan, who also worked with her mother, Kerstin Emhoff.

She’s a textile and art student

Is seems that Emhoff’s educational background has helped hone her personal style. She’s a textile student at New York City’s Parsons School of Design and specialises in knitwear. She opened up to Garage about launching a knitwear business and running it on her own. The clothing she creates has bright colours, and is inspired by her teen years watching The Simpsons. (She even references it in her website’s “under construction” message.)
