The Cathay Camera Club prides itself on uniting Hong Kong-based photographers of all skill levels and nationalities. And considering its membership is only around 40, the international make-up is impressive.
“We have members from Russia, Namibia, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, South Africa and the United Kingdom,” the club’s chairperson, Ivanna Vivcharyk, says.
“I’m from the Ukraine and Mary, our club secretary, is from Greece. The vice-chairperson is from the US and the treasurer is from Hong Kong,” she says.
“It’s this mix of different backgrounds and ideas that makes the club so interesting.”



To showcase the members’ creativity, the club is hosting “City In Focus”, a photography exhibition to be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, from November 26-28. A catalogue of images on show is also available.
Free to the public, the exhibition features photos in colour and black and white formats, and includes portraiture, landscape, abstract, as well as street and nature photography.

“It’s such an amazing collection of photos that captures each photographers’ interpretation of the city,” Vivcharyk says.
Established in 1982 – “we’re excited about next year’s 40th anniversary” – the English-speaking club meets once a month to share images and get critiques and comments from guest experts.
Photographers snap photos to fit various topics that, in the past, have included black and white, double exposure, surrealism, emotion and feelings, wildlife, and art.
“Focusing on a different topic each month encourages members to step out of their comfort zones,” Vivcharyk says.



The club also has group gatherings to “explore and shoot Hong Kong together”.
“We’ve had nature photography trips to Lamma Island and field trips that focus on black and white photography and food photography.” Other club outings have included insect shooting in Sai Kung and night shoots in Jordan and Yau Ma Tei.



Vivcharyk, who joined in 2016, says the club is not a teaching one but focuses more on the sharing of ideas.
“We have some nights where members’ photos get marked out of 10 by a professional, so there is some competition between members – it helps us to improve.”

Skyfall, Blade Runner 2049 Oscar-winning cinematographer releases photobook – but don’t expect behind-the-scenes celebrity shots

I pressed the shutter and closed my eyes, New Mexico (2014) by Roger Deakins. “I had it in mind to get a lightning bolt over the bar, but it was pure chance that I captured this one directly in the middle of the frame. I waited for over an hour that evening, and it was almost dark before the lightning struck. I was so surprised that I almost missed the shot. I only take single frames. A friend suggested I get a camera that takes multiple images and I could select from a series. No one would know the difference, but I would. Seems like cheating!” Photo: Roger Deakins / Damiani

Looking for summer, Weston-super-Mare (2001) by Roger Deakins. “This was taken in Weston-super-Mare on a rainy late summer’s day. Things become so much more interesting in the rain and I had specifically driven in the rain for two hours to get to Weston early in the morning. I loved this bus stop with its poster of the girl lying naked in the sun and wearing a pair of rubber boots. But it was quite some time before the woman with the umbrella turned up.
