“The desks in the rooms are modelled on old-style desks used in Hong Kong schools,” says Alex Fu, chief executive of Soravit Hotels, which last week opened its first concept hotel in the city, called attitude on granville. “I went to a local primary school and classes had about 45 students. It was tight. Those desks had to be small with small chairs so I was trying to reflect that in the rooms; show a piece of the city’s past.”

It’s just one of many nods to nostalgic Hong Kong that can be found at the 81-room hotel on Granville Road, in Tsim Sha Tsui. Others include vintage mailboxes, pay phones, radios and old Hong Kong street signs. The reception desk is made from plastic crates found at wet markets. Rooms categorised as Urban, Cozy, Elite and Studio Suite feature funky graphics curated by local design house One Bite, with attractions such as the Cross-Harbour ferry, Chungking Mansions and even martial arts master Bruce Lee boldly featured on walls.

The taste buds are well catered for, too, with contemporary Chinese restaurant Yum Cha serving dim sum with a modern twist (try the pineapple puffs and signature wild-eyed custard buns) while Urban Park dishes up modern European cuisine.
