Book publishing the traditional way has undeniable cachet, but who can deny the attraction of time-saving, money-maximising self-publishing, which also gives writers control over their work? Assuming you have produced something that someone else wants to read, and don’t mind the extra legwork, social-media guru Carole Roman says fame, fortune and fulfilment are possible, “without getting screwed”. Roman and bestselling author Julie Gerber have produced a how-to guide to selling books, providing advice on everything from engaging beta readers to preparing press releases, finding artwork (ready-made covers await on the internet) and setting up an author page on Amazon. Invaluable is the directory, which lists, among other things, sites for reliable reviews.
