I went to my usual cosmetics brand for more anti-wrinkle cream and the woman at the counter told me I had to deal with my “big pores”. Of course, I walked away without buying anything. I’d like to know what my options are.
Pore Performance, Tsim Sha Tsui

The Dictator rules: If you believed all the hype thrown at you, you’d have bigger problems than socalled big pores. Still, the manipulative practices of cosmetics professionals do seem to capitalise on our insecurities when we’re at our most vulnerable. So, I think Pretty Woman-style revenge is in order. Make purchases from their competitors, then swing by that mean counter with your shopping bags. Look them in the eye, simply say, “Big mistake,” then walk away. Now, I’m no expert, but here’s what I’ve learned. You’re not getting rid of your pores – duh – you’re minimising their appearance. Lancôme’s Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector targets pores and wrinkles with hyaluronic acid, among other things (HK$700; Beauty Bazaar, 100 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 3180 1648). And you can’t have missed all the instore and outdoor ads for The Porefessional minimising balm by Benefit Cosmetics (HK$300; Faces, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2110 3950). Perricone MD also does a line; try the Intensive Pore Minimiser made with a cocktail of acids (HK$490; Joyce Beauty, Harbour City, tel: 2367 0860). Organic beauty brand Melvita does a Hydrating Facial Gel (HK$430; K11, 18 Hanoi Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 3122 4027) with rose seed milk to tighten pores.

I read that actress Olivia Munn wears a lot of denim shirts with jeans. Who makes the best ones? I love her look!
Blue Munn Day, Tai Tam

The Dictator: You do know that wearing similar clothes won’t make you look like her, right? Never mind. Apparently, double-denim is still in. Just make sure you don’t wear matching washes or you might be expected to do maintenance work. The bodacious Ms Munn likes her shirts baggy, but mere mortals would look better with a slim fit – perhaps from GStar Raw (HK$1,295 to HK$1,795; 77 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 3104 9099). Calvin Klein Jeans does great ones, from dark blue to distressed denim (about HK$1,200; Times Square, Causeway Bay, tel: 2506 9506). Levi’s adds a designer touch with its Icons line, including a short-sleeved western shirt and another with long bell sleeves (HK$499 to HK$899; Hysan Place, Causeway Bay, tel: 2613 9023). Or add some print with True Religion’s indigo check (HK$1,499; Times Square, tel: 3583 0089). Prefer one without a collar? Check out Replay (HK$1,690; 2 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, tel: 2972 2780). For a bit of a 1980s throwback look, there’s the acid-wash shirt by Tough Jeansmith (HK$775; 51 Granville Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2722 0038). If all you’re looking for is a basic denim shirt, then head to Cotton On (only HK$229 to HK$289 each; 42 Granville Road, tel: 2724 0070).
