Wing Chun
Invented by an anonymous nun and refined by the beautiful tofu-seller Yim Wing-chun, this close-range art is designed to be deadly even against opponents with stronger physiques. It’s fast and logical, aiming to deliver the most powerful strikes with minimal effort through strategic positioning. 
Ving Tsun Athletic Association
Established by Ip Man’s seven disciples in 1967, on Ip’s orders, the first and biggest Wing Chun association organizes competitions, social gatherings and seminars. More importantly, it offers classes led by some of the most respected names in Wing Chun: Wong Hong-chung and Ip Man’s sons Ip Chun and Ip Ching. Classes are held daily.

Sifu Wan Kam-leung
Wan Kam Leung Practical Wing Chun Kung Fu International 
Sifu Wan is one of the earliest students of Ip Man’s disciple Wong Shun-leung and he’s come up with a system modified for modern-day use—and approved by the elders. He’s even taught his system to the Royal Police Force. Wan’s school welcomes foreign students. Classes are held daily.

Hung Kuen: Popularized by martial artist, revolutionary and folk hero Wong Fei-hung, this southern Chinese kung fu-style places an emphasis on strength and hand techniques. Hung Kuen believes in applying force against force and is best for people with a strong build.
Bao Zi Lin-Li Chan Wo Sports Association 
Sifu Li Chan-wo is a direct student of Wong Fei-hung’s wife, who entrusted Li with the mission to promote Hung Kuen before she passed away in 1982. The association offers a variety of classes in hand techniques and weaponry like swords and knives. Some hand techniques, however, are only passed down to official disciples.

Tai Chi
All about the balance of Yin and Yang, this philosophical martial arts form is an internally oriented kung fu celebrated for health benefits and its clever techniques, intended to redirect opponents’ brute force. It’s also a highly flexible form of fist-fighting—it’s not just slow movements as practiced by the elderly in parks. 
Practical Tai Chi 
Master Kie Brooks teaches in both English and Cantonese. He has won many international competitions, written a students’ handbook and published an audio CD introduction to Tai Chi. Classes are mostly held on weekday evenings.

Sudden Thunder Tai Chi Institute 
Founded by master Chow Chin-ching, who learned from the masters of Chen-style Tai Chi, the institute holds classes in Sheung Wan, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mei Foo and Tuen Mun.

Wushu
While kung fu refers to all Chinese martial arts forms, “Wushu” refers to the development of these styles into a sport for competition and exhibition purposes. It’s not very practical—mid-air flips and intricate routines may be stunning, but they also make you more vulnerable. A more practical variation is Sanda, aka Chinese boxing, which focuses on the more practical techniques within Wushu.
Hong Kong Wushu Union 
With approval from the Olympic Association, the union not only provides Wushu and Sanda classes, but also organizes many local and regional competitions. Classes are held in various locations including Lei Yue Mun and Causeway Bay.

Taekwondo
 Originating in Korea, taekwondo is one of the most popular martial arts in Hong Kong. It’s an Olympic sport, known for its assertive style and impressive kicks.
Korea Taekwondo Cheung Do Kwan 
The association offers wide-ranging classes for everyone from children to the elderly in various venues across town, including the Western branch (Room 13, 6/F, 188 Connaught Rd. West, Sai Ying Pun). Their masters teach in English and Korean.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Commonly used in Mixed Martial Arts matches, this self-defense system is very effective in real fights, with a focus on locking and grappling techniques.
