Luk Be A Lady


Up-and-coming fashion designer Vivian Luk recently debuted her first eveningwear collection with a show at Cipriani. She gives Jane Leung the inside scoop on working with Vera Wang, channeling Peter Pan, and what it takes to make it to the top.
HK Magazine: You were raised in Canada and educated in New York. Why did you come to Hong Kong to launch your career?
	Vivian Luk: It was a personal choice. My family is originally from Hong Kong but I was born in Toronto and moved to New York when I was 19. I’ve always meant to return to where my family is from, but I was just waiting for the right time. Hong Kong is a place of opportunity.
HK: Where do you get your inspiration from?
	VL: For my debut collection, I used the story of Peter Pan as my inspiration. It’s not your typical fairytale—it’s no Cinderella. The pirate theme, for instance, is both masculine and romantic; you can see it in the structure and ruffles of my collection. But then the soft, delicate drapery and wrapping are all inspired by petals, leaves, and flowers. Everything is tied into nature and fantasy. In general, when I am designing, I don’t just discuss proportions, especially with a made-to-order gown. I need to look at a woman’s personality and communicate it through the dress.
HK: When did you realize you wanted to become a designer?
	VL: At a very young age. It started with my father who was an interior designer. He would always sketch around me. In high school, we had to choose an internship for a profession we were interested in. I wanted to do something involved with lifestyle such as designing, but I didn’t want to do the exact same thing as my dad, so I chose fashion.
HK: How did you land a job working for Vera Wang so soon out of design school? What was it like working for her?
	VL: I worked as an intern at Donna Karan during school, and then I was hired as assistant designer at DKNY children after graduation. Shortly after, I was hired at Vera Wang, as an assistant designer to the Vice President of Design. I assisted the VP of Design with everything under the Vera Wang label, then was promoted to specialize in all the made-to-order celebrity projects. Eventually I was promoted again to design in the Bridal division, working directly under Vera Wang herself. Working for Vera is great because she is very serious, but at the same time she knows how to have fun and relax when work is getting too tense.
HK: What is the most important lesson you learned from working there?
	VL: “Don’t design anything you wouldn’t wear.” Vera really believes in her creations. Her new ready-to-wear line “Simply Vera” is true to her own style. It’s edgy and street, yet dreamy and romantic. Vera wears everything she designs.
HK: What advice would you give some one who wants to make it big in the industry?
	VL: Know your strengths and weakness. No one can be good at everything. People have different reasons for getting into fashion: fame, business, love of art, and they try to do it all, but it doesn’t work that way. You have to know what you’re good at, take that route, and then you will be known for it.
