Thai’d Up

Shericole Wong has been practicing the ancient art of Muay Thai for several months. She talks to Bobby Lei about upping her badass quotient.

HK: How did you get started?
SW
: I wanted to lose weight and keep fit. I’ve only lost three pounds, but my waist is one inch smaller, and my arms and legs are firmer and tighter. I’m so happy.

HK: Why did you choose it?
SW:
I have a lot of friends in the class, so I just joined. Now I train once or twice a week.

HK: What’s your normal training routine like?
SW:
I just follow the instructors. There’s a lot of hitting the bags, practicing kicks, physical callisthenics. It’s very tiring because it’s nearly non-stop for over an hour. Classes usually have around a dozen students and several trainers.

HK: What’s your favorite part of kickboxing?
SW:
I like to beat on Kenneth, the instructor. I’m friends with him and it’s fun to be able to kick his ass.

HK: Do you think you can defend yourself in a fight?
SW:
Maybe better than before. I practice just for defence and fitness, not competition. But I can confidently punch a guy in the face if he gets too close to me, and it would almost definitely hurt.

Shericole practices at The Ring Thai Boxing Studio with hundreds of other students. 2/F, Ho Lee Commercial Building, 17-22 Lan Kwai Fong, Central, 2526-2989, www.the-ring-thai-boxing-studio.com.
