Chinese Rapper MC Jin
MC Jin is the first high-profile Chinese rapper in the United States, and seven-time winner of American televised rap battle “Freestyle Friday.” Freshly relocated to Hong Kong, he talks about his ABC identity and his affection for TVB.

I was born in Miami. My parents are both immigrants from Hong Kong.
I live with my grandparents now. I’m a firm believer in family. Family values is the most important aspect of the Chinese identity.
I don’t feel like Hong Kong has changed since I was a kid. It’s big, there are people everywhere, the traffic is busy and everybody’s in a hurry.
I’m still learning about the hip-hop scene, the music industry and the entertainment business here.
Normally, people who do well in Hong Kong try to break into the international market. But I’m not normal. I’ve come from the US, and I’m trying to break into the Hong Kong market.
It’s natural that Hong Kongers would want to hear my album. Actually, it was Wyclef Jean who first suggested that I rap in Cantonese, while he was producing other projects for me.
There’s one thing I don’t understand. Whenever I freestyle at a club in Hong Kong, the manager asks me not to rap in Chinese. But this is a Cantonese-speaking community!
