Sunbeam theatre in North Point, traditionally a venue for Cantonese opera, will host an unlikely crossover concert mixing traditional Chinese instruments with an electric organ, bass guitar, and drums.
Sunbeam Collision is the Hong Kong premier of a year-long collaboration between fusion band SIU2, led by local musician Ng Cheuk-yin, and young virtuosi from the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, HKCO4U.
Ng, the mastermind behind the project, says: "I have had a decade of collaboration with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in the form of music composition and arrangement, but never in this kind of crossover performance in my own musical style."
The versatile composer says the upcoming performance will add a new dimension to traditional Chinese music and "play with a groove that moves you to dance".
Ng composed part of the music for this concert and will play the Chinese sheng and Western electric organ. He says he drew inspiration from this city's environment — a mix between the East and the West — to form his six-person fusion band in 2008.
Zhang Chongxue, principal huqin player for the Chinese Orchestra, will play the erhu in this concert. "Every instrument played at this concert is one of a kind, so it is an ensemble of representative instruments from Chinese and Western music," she says. The historical venue provides the context to collision of another kind. "It will be a collision of tradition and modernity for the audience to see uptempo, pop compositions being played here," Zhang says.
The crossover is a testament to the broader idea of "fusion" in Hong Kong life, Ng says. "The identity of Hongkongers is often rather blurred. That could lead to more freedom in the way we approach music here," he says.
To get into the fusion mood, concert ticket holders can grab a free glass of wine in the foyer one hour before the concert.
