Perhaps the ultimate luxe choice, Sony's VPL-VW500ES (HK$85,800) delivers Ultra HD 4k resolution. Until Blu-ray discs come with that kind of detail - which should be sometime during 2014 - there's precious little to watch in the new format, but movie fans after future-proof products should take note. With 3-D support, silky smooth Reality Creation images and some excellent upscaling, the VPL-VW500ES offers the most convincing performance yet.

Another 3-D-ready projector, Epson's EH-TW8200 (HK$25,800) - manufactured in Shenzhen - is a great value choice. It doesn't offer Ultra HD 4k pictures, but its Full HD images are precise and colourful. That's down to some clever Super-Resolution technology, though the easy set-up and powerful lamp impress most of all; the EH-TW8200 can be placed off-centre to the screen and be used at any time of day.

JVC's entry-level DLA-X35 (HK$27,900) is perfect if you have a spare room for a home cinema. The brightness of the lamp is more than enough to help produce luscious colours and immense Full HD detail, but it's not designed for use during the day. Best in a blackout, the DLA-X35 boasts terrific black levels that make gloomy films really shine, and it does 3-D, too.
