Jiangmen, with its proximity to maritime trade routes and to cities such as Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, is a commercial hub and an important gateway within the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of southern China.

Its name, meaning “river gate” in Chinese, refers to the city’s location in the Pearl River Delta at the confluence of the Xi and Peng rivers and to the Penglai and Yandun mountains to the city’s north and south.

Its role as a trading centre goes back to the late Yuan dynasty (1206-1368) and early Ming dynasty (1368-1644) when Jiangmen was a growing agricultural market for the coastal region west of Guangzhou.

Fast forward to the early 1980s, and it had an infusion of capital from Hong Kong businesses and investors. Jiangmen quickly became a booming industrial town, and today is one of 11 in the GBA, an initiative to promote regional economic development.

Jiangmen is also now trying to position itself as a tourist destination. The city has natural features such as forests, lakes and hot springs, as well as buildings constructed in the 1920s and 1930s by returning overseas Chinese that combine Eastern and Western architecture and design features.

It takes less than two hours to get from Hong Kong to Jiangmen using the MTR Corporation’s West Kowloon to Zhanjiang West cross-border high-speed rail service, which stops at Jiangmen, making it ideal for a day trip or weekend getaway.
