The zombie genre is one of the most popular in Korea, with even Netflix getting in on the action with horror dramas like 2019’s Kingdom and 2022 thriller All of Us Are Dead.
Now it is looking to take K-zombies to the next level with a zombie-themed reality show, to be made in partnership with South Korean media company Kakao Entertainment.
The streaming giant has announced Zombieverse, a television production that follows a group of contestants fighting for survival as Seoul, the capital of South Korea, comes under a zombie attack.
Park Jin-kyung, writer and director of television programme My Little Television, has teamed up with Moon Sang-don, creator of reality shows Hey! First Time in Korea? and Late Night Stroll, to helm the new show.

The cast includes comedians Noh Hong-chul and Park Na-rae, singers Din Din and Tsuki, and actress Lee Si-young. They need to complete tasks and secure their own food, shelter and safety.
Noh starred in Netflix’s The Hungry and the Hairy in 2021. Park’s stand-up comedy show Park Na-rae: Glamour Warning was released on Netflix in 2019. Lee starred in Netflix’s 2020 apocalyptic horror drama Sweet Home – of which seasons two and three have been confirmed.

The producers have said the series, showing people struggling to survive as humanity teeters on the brink of extinction, will be a thrill to watch.
“I collaborated with Netflix for the first time through Zombieverse, and the filming has already been completed. It is a television project that started with a simple question, ‘How would people react if zombies appeared in the real world’? It will be interesting to watch what role the contestants play – a hero, a villain or a bystander,” Park, the director, says.
To create a realistic zombie show, the art team of All of Us Are Dead took part in the project. The zombies were trained by the choreographers of Kingdom.

Last July, Netflix Korea announced it would begin investing in unscripted shows.
As part of its move, the global streaming giant will release Physical 100, where 100 participants compete to be the most physically fit person, on January 24.
It also plans to produce another survival show called Siren: Survive the Island, to be released in 2024.
