Summer is a great time to watch spine-tingling horror – long a way to beat the heat – and this year, several major Korean actors are wading into roles in the genre to get their chills.

1. Delusion

Last seen in the Netflix drama Doona! and the sci-fi melodrama Wonderland, also available on Netflix, Bae Suzy is reportedly in talks to appear in an intriguing vampire-themed series.
The K-pop idol has been approached to star in Delusion, which is an adaptation of a popular webtoon of the same name by Hongjacga (Dr Brain).

Set in 1935 in Gyeongseong (the name of Seoul during the 1910-1945 Japanese colonial occupation of South Korea) as well as 19th-century Shanghai, the story focuses on a painter named Yoon I-ho who becomes increasingly obsessed with the mysterious female vampire Song Jeong-hwa – the role offered to Bae.

Directing the series will be Han Jae-rim, director of hit Korean films The King and Emergency Declaration, who recently made his first foray into television drama with Netflix’s The 8 Show.

Bae, a former member of the K-pop outfit Miss A, became a big-screen star thanks to her appearance in the hit romance Architecture 101. She has since appeared in many major K-dramas, including Vagabond, Start-Up and the critically acclaimed Anna.

2. The Waking

Parasite actor Choi Woo-shik is in discussions to take on the lead role in Disney+ series The Waking, about an organisation that manages giants and one that opposes them.

Choi is considering the role of Jun-ho, a character who works in the cold storage facility of one of the organisations. One day he discovers a special stone which grants him enormous power, turning him into a giant. He uses his new-found power to infiltrate one of the organisations.
