Review | Netflix K-drama review: Black Knight – Kim Woo-bin leads Mad Max-like dystopian sci-fi series that struggles for air

  • Kim Woo-bin is well cast as a heroic delivery driver in Black Knight, a sci-fi drama set in a dystopian South Korea where society is strictly regimented
  • Frustratingly, there is little in this lavishly produced Netflix show that catches the eye aside from the costumes, and the cast are given little to work with

Korean dystopias have been all the rage lately and the latest series to join that trend is the big-budget Netflix original Black Knight, a sci-fi drama that treats its social dystopia perhaps a little too seriously.

Based on the web comic Delivery Driver (which serves as the Korean title of the series), this six-part show stars Kim Woo-bin as a delivery driver named 5-8.

The story takes place in 2071, 40 years after a comet struck the Earth, killed 99 per cent of the population, submerged most of the planet under water and turned Korea into a desert with a polluted atmosphere.

In this dystopian world, society is strictly regimented by class and citizens are identified by QR codes tattooed on the backs of their hands. The lowest caste, known as the “refugees”, do not have QR stamps and live on the fringes of society.
