Hong Kong-based Richard Ekkebus and Agustin Balbi make Best Chefs Awards Top 100 list

  • Top of the list was Swedish chef Björn Frantzén, who also has a Hong Kong restaurant: Frantzén’s Kitchen
  • A number of Asian chefs made the list, which is voted on by chefs and industry professionals

Two Hong Kong-based chefs, Richard Ekkebus, culinary director the Landmark Mandarin Oriental in Central, and Agustin Balbi, executive chef of Haku in Tsim Sha Tsui, have made it onto the list of Best Chefs Awards Top 100, it was announced on Tuesday in Barcelona, Spain.

Top of the list was Björn Frantzén of restaurant Frantzén, in Stockholm, Sweden (he also has Frantzén’s Kitchen in Sheung Wan), followed by Joan Roca, of El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, and David Muñoz, of DiverXO, in Madrid, Spain.

The annual awards are voted on by chefs and industry professionals, from a list of 100 finalists.

In addition to Ekkebus (#34) and Balbi (#87), chefs on the list from Asia include Paul Pairet (#53) of UltraViolet in Shanghai; André Chiang at #66 (whose establishments include Sichuan Moon in Macau, and RAW in Taipei); Seiji Yamamoto, #14, of Nihonryori RyuGin in Tokyo, Shoun RyuGin in Taipei, and Tenku RyuGin in Hong Kong; Hiroyasu Kawate, #56, of Florilège in Tokyo; Yoshihiro Narisawa, #40, of Narisawa in Tokyo; and Osaka-based chefs, Yusuke Takada, #50, of La Cime, and Hajime Yoneda, #92, of Hajime.
Mauro Colagreco whose Michelin three-star restaurant, Mirazur, in Menton, France, came in at the top of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list this year (and who has Grill 58 in Macau), was #7 on the Best Chefs list.
