Top quality Mexican food save the tacos in Sheung Wan at Taqueria Super Macho

  • The grilled chicken tostada was the highlight of the night, which had vivid flavours and lots of texture
  • The tacos were a letdown because they were served “naked”. What’s wrong with the chef dressing them as he thinks they should be served?

We were so excited at the prospect of eating Mexican food at Taqueria Super Macho that four of us tried about three-quarters of the menu – despite the warning by our accommodating waiter that we were ordering too much.

We arrived at the small restaurant in Sheung Wan – where Yardbird was before it moved to larger premises – in the middle of a torrential downpour, soon after 6pm; they don’t take bookings, and we wanted to beat the crowd. It quickly started getting busy, and by around 7.30pm, people were lining up outside.

We started with a nicely seasoned, slightly chunky guacamole and chips (HK$68) which was served at the same time as the array of salsas and condiments we would need for the tacos (more on that later).

Our favourite dish came next: grilled chicken tostada (HK$58). The crisp tortilla was piled high with a thin layer of mashed black beans, pieces of chicken, peppers, salsa and crema, and had vivid flavours and lots of texture.
