Restaurant review: Kam Yee Shanghai Restaurant, North Point – cheap and delicious

Diners are queueing out the door at weekends, and with food this tasty it’s easy to see why

In an obscure shopping mall in North Point, a new Shanghainese restaurant has opened, serving surprisingly cheap and delicious fare, and it’s attracting queues of customers waiting outside the shop on weekends.

With premises of more than 1,000 square feet, the restaurant feels spacious. The portion sizes are large, and diners on a budget can have a bountiful meal.

The Shanghai pork ribs vegetable rice (HK$48) comes with thick slices of pork ribs and house-made char siu sauce.

The wonton chicken (HK$88) comes in a big bowl, with well-stuffed pork dumplings and half of a chicken. We like the golden river prawn (HK$108) that had been slathered with salty mayonnaise then deep-fried. It is a good choice to have with beer.

We also like the trademark dish – the xiao long bao (HK$35 for four). The soup was rich with the flavour of chicken feet, chicken bones and Chinese ham, and the wrapper was thin. We were instructed to eat it as soon as it was served, and it was a delightful mouthful.

Other than the usual Shanghainese fare, there are some creative dishes on offer. We enjoyed the odd sounding dish of cheese xiao long bao (HK$36 for four), which had a salty taste that goes well with the soup and pork.
