Jordan's newly opened Cuban-themed bar and restaurant is a sequel to the original Castro's, a Tsim Sha Tsui institution and one of my favourite bars in Hong Kong. For the most part, the new one lives up to the reputation of its big brother. The decor is overtly Cuban without being obnoxious or kitschy; the vibe is welcoming, laid back and homely. And the staff members are all warm and friendly professionals who will remember your name and favourite drink after a few visits. The new Castro's is a bit different in that it offers a full menu and feels more like a restaurant. It also boasts a charming outdoor patio area, which is a perfect place to enjoy

a cigar.

the bar is staffed by bartenders, not mixologists, and the drinks are basic, but with bold flavours, and come big. They certainly don't skimp on the alcohol. Not that they taste cheap, no artificial syrups here, just simple drinks, mixed without frills. The mojitos and caipirinhas - Brazilian cachaça (a liquor made from fermented sugar cane juice) shaken with sugar and lime (each HK$69) - are customer favourites and it is easy to see why. They are fresh, straightforward and strong. I also tried the Mai Tai (HK$66) and loved it. A Mai Tai is supposed to be a bit of a tawdry thing, and their version hits all the right notes. I also ordered a Singapore Sling (HK$66), a mix of gin, cherry brandy, Benedictine, lemon juice, sugar syrup and port. I should have read the ingredients before I ordered. This drink was just too much, thick, sweet and a bit medicinal.

a welcome addition to what was a fairly quiet residential area. Like the original Castro's, it is a good neighbourhood bar that's defined by its lack of pretension and the friendly staff.
