Vivienne Westwood designs cover for Alice in Wonderland anniversary edition
Reprint marking 150 years since first appearance of Lewis Carroll's comic fantasy also features illustrations by John Tenniel from first edition
British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has collaborated with publishing house Vintage Classics to release a special edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to mark the book's 150th anniversary.
Westwood - whose catwalk shows have been inspired by episodes from Carroll’s fantasy novel, from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party to her twisted take on Britishness - says she often sees the world through the looking glass.
“The Alice books are so stimulating to read. They make you believe you could be in a parallel world – or that the world we think we know reflects the way we are programmed to see it,” the fashion designer said.
The cover design was inspired by the Harlequin, a print that’s been synonymous with the Westwood brand since the 1980s. The Harlequin is the most well-known character from the Italian Commedia dell’arte, a form of theatre characterised by masked “types”.
