With people stuck at home due to the coronavirus crisis, certain norms are starting to go out of the window: women are leaving their bras in their drawers, and men are shunning their razors.

The quarantine beard can take many forms. Fashion designer Harald Glööckler, who infamously sees his own face as an artwork, has been seen sporting grey hairs on his chin while gardening, and on Instagram, actor Jim Carrey has been keeping a beard diary.

“Day 5 of my wild and untamed face. Please don’t put your hands near the cage,” reads one entry.

How do the experts see such experiments? Designer Michael Michalsky points out that beards have been back in fashion for several years. “The people who are coming up with the idea in lockdown perhaps didn’t know it before,” he says with a laugh. “But why not?”

In his opinion, a beard needs to be well-kept. “A covering of wild undergrowth on a man’s face looks like a rubbish tip in a park: unkempt,” he says.
