Online dating can be both fun and frustrating. You can be thrilled about meeting your date in person for the first time and decide to throw caution to the wind; equally, the person sitting across from you may not be what you expected.
In some extreme cases, it is a different person altogether.
Being truthful about your identity is a matter of basic decency, because you cannot pretend to be someone you are not – at least not for a sustained period – especially if you are looking for a long-term relationship.
According to a survey of more than 1,300 single people in Asia, including Hong Kong, conducted by Lunch Actually, a regional dating service, there is a gap between how singles behave in online dating and how they expect fellow singles to behave.
Only 18 per cent of singles – men and women – spend time creating a comprehensive personal profile on dating apps. However, 60 per cent of them have admitted to reading other people’s profiles in detail before deciding whether they are interested in them.
