Too hot – or wet – to cross the border this weekend? Fret not, there are plenty of things you and your family can do in Hong Kong instead, come rain or shine. Here are five we recommend.

1. Skywalkers: A Love Story

An unusual blend of urban exploration and romance, this Netflix documentary directed by award-winning filmmaker Jeff Zimbalist follows a young Russian couple, Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, as they illegally scale tall buildings around the world and snap stunning photos of themselves there as their prizes.

While it is certainly not an activity to be condoned, the film offers us the vicarious pleasure of visiting places we could have never imagined of going ourselves, including high up on Kuala Lumpur’s Merdeka 118 tower and Hong Kong’s Central Plaza and Tsing Ma bridge. Best watched on a television screen, the bigger the better. Read our interview with director Jeff Zimbalist

2. Blossoms – Solo Exhibition of Jin Yucheng

Chinese writer Jin Yucheng is best known for his novel Blossoms, which Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai has adapted into a popular television series.

Jin is also an accomplished artist. He started drawing when he was working in a factory at the age of 12, an interest that has persisted through his years working as an executive editor, as well as illustrator of his own novels.

The writer, who is in the city for the 2024 Hong Kong Book Fair, will also meet fans on Friday at the show opening from 5.00-7.30pm.
