Review | Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 movie review: James Gunn’s last Marvel adventure delivers the usual big, dumb fun
- The final outing of Marvel’s ragtag space rangers dips into the strangest corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to bring us plenty of weirdness – and fun
- Regulars Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana lend their voices to the story; Will Poulter is a good addition, Sylvester Stallone less so
3.5/5 stars
Marvel’s ragtag space rangers are back for one last ride. James Gunn is once again at the helm (after being fired initially by Disney for old tweets the studio considered offensive) and it marks a fine sign-off before he defects to make DC Comics movies.
Here, the focus is Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), badly injured after the powerful gold-skinned super-being Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) crashes into mining colony Knowhere, where the Guardians are based.
Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) urges the gang to save their friend, a mission that will lead us into Rocket’s origin story and into the path of The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), a ruthless madman who has been experimenting on all manner of beings in search of perfection.
He even created Counter Earth, a replica of Quill’s home planet that comes complete with identikit suburban houses – albeit occupied by a bizarre menagerie of creatures.
Joining Quill are Drax (Dave Bautista, as hilarious as ever), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and, of course, everyone’s favourite talking tree, Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).
