Two men journey together in a quietly touching road movie from Greek first-time director Stelios Kammitsis.

A former assistant to the late Theo Angelopoulos, one of Greece’s boldest filmmakers, Kammitsis may have a long way to go to match him, but The Man with the Answers is a promising and self-assured debut.

The story follows the closed-off Victoras (Vasilis Magouliotis), whose world is sent into a tailspin when his grandmother, with whom he lives, dies. An ex-champion diver, Victor now works in a furniture factory, but leaves it all behind after his loss. The plan is to drive to Bavaria to find his estranged mother.

On the ferry, he meets Matthias (Anton Weil), who drops more than a few not-so-subtle hints about needing a lift. In one of the more amusing moments, Victor tries (badly) to hide behind his map when he’s in his car – which he claimed not to own in the hope of putting Matthias off. Guilt-ridden, he offers him a ride.
