Entertainment executives are funding sure-fire productions, capitalising on people’s enduring fascination with Princess Diana and the cultlike popularity of Game of Thrones.
Thrones author George R.R. Martin has signed a five-year deal with HBO, the studio said, promising more adventures with the dragons and warring families of Westeros.
The 72-year-old, whose unfinished book series A Song of Ice and Fire was the foundation of the record-breaking Game of Thrones television success, is already working on the prequel series House of the Dragon, set 300 years earlier, which is expected to air in 2022.
Parent company WarnerMedia confirmed Martin had signed a five-year deal to develop content for HBO and HBO Max without specifying the nature of the content. The original Game of Thrones series bagged a staggering 59 Emmys, so further instalments are all but certain.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the deal worth “mid-eight figures” in US dollars could include the saga of warrior queen Nymeria who reigned a millennium before the Thrones saga is set. Other Thrones projects reportedly in development include an underworld tale set in Westeros capital King’s Landing called “Flea Bottom”.
