Soyeon from (G) I-DLE: how K-pop star went from failed auditions to leader of the pack
- After seeing BigBang as a schoolgirl, Soyeon decided to become a K-pop star and auditioned at a number of music labels
- She had no success until she started rapping at auditions, and was eventually signed to Cube Entertainment
When South Korean girl group (G) I-DLE first appeared in 2018, their agency and production company, Cube Entertainment, was suffering from years of losses and struggling to produce K-pop groups that achieved sustained success.
All of this changed with the arrival of (G) I-DLE. Their debut EP, I Am, reached No 5 on Billboard’s world albums chart a week after its release. Their second EP, I Made, repeated the feat in March 2019. Five months later, the group broke into the Japanese market with their first Japanese EP, Latata, which hit No 5 on the Oricon top 50 albums chart.
If you look at the credits on (G) I-DLE’s albums, one name appears frequently: Soyeon, the leader of the girl group. Not only does the multi-talented artist write, produce and arrange music, her stage presence electrifies the group’s live shows as she raps and dances on stage.
Here’s a look at Soyeon’s life so far.
