Kim Hyo-yeon, better known as just Hyoyeon, is a member of the mega successful K-pop band Girls’ Generation.
Born on September 22, 1989, she is part of the original nine-member line-up that took the Asian pop scene by storm in 2007.
Other than being a singer, Hyoyeon is also a rapper, TV personality and DJ, although it is her dancing that makes her stand out from the rest of the group.
Here are some more facts about the much-loved “dancing queen”.

Girls’ Generation subunit Oh! GG
Managed by South Korea’s largest entertainment company SM Entertainment, Girls’ Generation is one of the country’s most commercially successful all-girl bands.
In 2014, one of the members, Jessica, left the group and three years later, Tiffany, Sooyoung and Seohyun also ended their contracts with SM Entertainment.
The remaining five members – Hyoyeon, Sunny, Taeyeon, Yoona, and Yuri – then formed a sub unit called Oh! GG, and released their first single Lil’ Touch in 2018.

Dancer and TV personality
Dance has always been a big part of Hyoyeon’s life. She had formal dance training when she was at school, learning styles including jazz, Latin, and hip-hop.
In 1999, she went to Winners Dance School, which specialises in hip-hop. She also underwent training with famous Korean choreographers such as Kwon Seon-jin and Shim Jae-won.


When she was 11, she passed the dancing audition for SM Entertainment and received training for six years before her debut with Girls’ Generation in 2007. But before that, she was already a well-known dancer.
Hyoyeon has performed on many TV programmes including Dancing with the Stars in 2012, in which she and her partner Kim Hyung-seok won second place.
Hyoyeon has also appeared on reality TV shows including, in 2011, Invincible Youth, in which K-pop idols were sent to survive in rural areas. In 2015, Hyoyeon started hosting her own reality TV show, Hyoyeon’s One Million Likes.  


Solo career
Mystery in 2016, followed by Wannabe, featuring Korean rapper San E, in 2017 paved Hyoyeon’s way as a solo artist. She then reinvented herself as DJ Hyo. Her third solo single Sober, in collaboration with Dutch-Turkish DJ Ummet Ozcan, was released in both English and Korean by SM Entertainment in 2018.
In an interview with Paper Magazine, Hyoyeon said the song was about “liberating girls who feel trapped” and shows that girls can “rebel against social norms”.
Working with American rapper 3LAU, Hyoyeon released her 2018 single Punk Right Now, which she also co-wrote and co-produced. Her latest song Badster was released in July.

Ahead of other members of the Girls’ Generation, in July, Hyoyeon published her own fashion and beauty book Hyo Style. Through sharing her fashion choices in the book, Hyoyeon intends to help her fans be confident and find their own styles.
