Performing arts shows are in full swing this week with the first staging of the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo (HKPAX), while there is also classical music, ballet and a concert with a jazz legend to look forward to.
Here are our top five performance picks for this weekend (October 18-20).
1. The Hong Kong Joy of Music Festival 2024
Now in its 19th edition, The Hong Kong Joy of Music Festival is back with its much-loved abundance of concerts and masterclasses that have brought a great many internationally acclaimed virtuosos to the city.
Organised by The Chopin Society of Hong Kong, the festival runs from October 16-22 at Hong Kong City Hall.

Acclaimed Uruguayan classical guitarist Alvaro Pierri will play selected classical Hispanic music compositions and his own improvisations on October 18.
On October 19, a special live-streamed programme will see musicians from Hong Kong, Vienna and Prague play together as if they are in the same concert hall.
One part will feature a string sextet in Vienna and Prague performing pieces by Brahms, Haydn and others shown live on a screen in Hong Kong. Another part will see the Chopin Society’s resident Logos String Quartet playing in Hong Kong, which will be streamed to European audiences.
On October 20, Russian pianist Ilya Rashkovskiy will perform Frederic Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 28, after which the Logos String Quartet will wrap up the evening’s concert with two pieces by Gabriel Fauré.

2. Meeting In-between Time (rerun)

The City Contemporary Dance Company will stage a rerun of the award-winning production Meeting In-between Time at The Pokfulam Farm.
The multimedia dance performance incorporates video mapping, sound design and light installations, while the unusual outdoor venue is a historic site well suited for a work about different perspectives of time.
Meeting In-between Time was first staged in 2022 and won the prize for outstanding alternative space production at the 2023 Hong Kong Dance Awards.

3. Dimension Plus: Remediation Ensemble

Staged as part of HKPAX, Remediation Ensemble is the first production to be put on at the new East Kowloon Cultural Centre in Kowloon Bay.
The mixed-media show is a collaboration between Japanese sound artist Ei Wada and Hong Kong new media artist Keith Lam. It will see the pair, and other musicians, turn everyday electronic devices such as neon signs, bar code scanners and CRT televisions into musical instruments.

4. Hong Kong Ballet: The Butterfly Lovers
The Butterfly Lovers is based on a classical Chinese romance between modest scholar Liang Shanbo and proud heiress Zhu Yingtai, who meet while studying in the same school – one that Zhu could only enter by pretending to be a man.
This new ballet has a star-studded production team led by choreographers Ricky Hu Songwei and Mai Jingwen, with sets and costumes designed by Oscar-winner Tim Yip and an original score by Chinese composer Tian Mi, who was inspired by The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto.

5. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and jazz legend Wynton Marsalis will perform at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on October 18.
The American trumpet player will celebrate his 63rd birthday with a programme that showcases a fusion of Eastern and Western musical cultures.
