The deepening rivalry between the United States and China has seen both superpowers eager to draw nations into its orbit, but one country has in recent months increasingly found itself in the centre of the tug of war: the Philippines.

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden welcomed Philippine leader Ferdinand Marcos Jnr to the White House for talks, where he reaffirmed Washington’s security commitments to Manila and spoke fondly of their “deep friendship”.

“We are facing new challenges and I couldn’t think of a better partner to have than you,” Biden told Marcos.

The Philippine president described ties with the US as essential amid “possibly the most complicated geopolitical situation in the world right now”.
