The bus nanny is the unsung heroine of last week’s coach crash on Tai Chung Kiu Road, which injured 22 schoolchildren, simply by ensuring all 55 of them on the bus were wearing their seat belts (“School bus crash leaves 22 children hurt after coach hits car and van”, June 4).

In the words of Police Superintendent Lam Chuen, as reported in the Post: “It is lucky that the injuries of the children were minor because they were wearing seat belts”.

Had this been a regular school bus in which there are no seat belts, as permitted by the Transport Department, the outcome would have been different. This collision clearly shows the importance of wearing a seat belt. The Transport Department should require all school buses to install seat belts and not wait until it is too late.

It would also be fantastic if the Road Safety Section of the Transport Department or even the Hong Kong Road Safety Association recognised and celebrated the bus nanny for the important road safety role she played ensuring all the schoolchildren wore their seat belts, which undoubtedly prevented serious injuries or worse arising out of this crash. Well done, bus nanny!
