I am very happy that the government has decided to suspend the travel bubble with Singapore. I have not been comfortable with the idea ever since discussions with Singapore began. In my opinion, the stakes are too high. It is already hard enough to track cases in a community of 7.4 million people; adding another 5.7 million to that is just absurd.
It might seem like the situation has stabilised, but all it takes is one untraceable Covid-19 case and another wave will start. Most importantly, a travel bubble is far from necessary.
I understand that a travel bubble could help the economy, but surely people’s lives are more important than money. We should just focus on completely stopping the virus from spreading, or else the pandemic will never end.
The travel bubble was shelved this time because of the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Singapore, and I am relieved. At least in Hong Kong, we are preventing extra stress and Covid-19 risk.
