It is unwise for Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor to give in to every demand made by the protesters. In an editorial, the Post urged the chief executive to address the current political crisis with a show of leadership, an implicit call for her to bow to the demands of the intransigent protesters (“Show of leadership needed, starting with the chief executive”, July 30).

The cause of the ongoing protests was the proposed extradition bill which has since been shelved by the government. Lam has apologised for her misjudgment and pledged to shape future policies to fit the needs of the city more closely. She has said an independent commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of inappropriate police action is not required as there is already an existing mechanism for the task. She has fully redeemed herself and said her passion and determination to serve the city will see her through her term in office.
All stakeholders in Hong Kong should now show their support for the government and the police force, and call for an end to the ongoing protests that are hurting our economy and affecting our way of life. The government must not send the wrong message by making more concessions.

If protesters do not listen to the majority, the endgame is for the police to make arrests until all offenders are put behind bars.

Bowing to lawless offenders is never the answer.
