Pushy Hong Kong parents are often labelled as “monster parents”, on social media or elsewhere. But modern society also has a role to play in giving rise to this kind of parenting style.

Our society is a competitive one, and parents want their children to be the best, as they fight for the limited resources in Hong Kong.

Therefore, some local parents, especially those with only one child, try their best to ensure that their children’s interests are protected and they do not lag behind their peers. So they can be very hard on their children, whether about studies or extracurricular activities.

It is not that they should not blame the schools for the drilling and the high-pressure tests, which leave parents no choice but to prepare their children as best they can.

Parents, as the pupils’ guardians, have the right to protest. But it is sincerely hoped that they can be more respectful towards school authorities and also appreciate the constraints faced by the schools.
