Hong Kong restaurant group Maxim’s opened its 2,000th Asian store in the city, spurred by the recovery in the catering business and with an eye on changing consumption patterns in the post-Covid-19 era.

The group marked the landmark opening with the inauguration of its Simplylife Bakery Cafe in the APM mall, Kwun Tong this month.

“Our business has picked up by around 80 to 90 per cent from pre-Covid levels,” said Keith Siu Tak-wai, Maxim’s Group chief operating officer for Hong Kong and Macau. “One of the main reasons [for the partial recovery] is that the flow of tourists had not made a full return.”

He said there had been a 50 to 60 per cent recovery in tourist traffic.

Siu said that since many Hongkongers were travelling to mainland China after the border reopening, stores near the borders in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Sheung Shui had suffered, with business recovery in those areas lagging behind other places.

Almost 600,000 people left the city on Saturday via air, land and sea control points as of 9pm, Immigration Department data showed, with 70,842 departures via the airport. Some 337,898 people arrived in Hong Kong.
