GRAND PASSION I was born and raised in Jamaica. I'm the fourth son of Bob Marley and my mother is Janet Hunt. When I was 12, I was expelled from school in Jamaica and sent to Miami. After high school I got a full scholarship to play football at the University of Miami, so I didn't miss too many classes [laughs]. After university I co-founded Tuff Gong - a line of clothing inspired by my father, because I love the way my father carried himself. I love the way he dressed and I want people to be inspired and move like my father. Then I went into farming, establishing Marley Coffee, which is another passion of mine. I founded a coffee farm in Jamaica; we're helping people, we're being sustainable, we're creating opportunities. And now I'm working with the House of Marley, making sound systems and headphones that are eco-friendly. They're made from recycled plastic and paper, and sustainable materials like wood. All of these things are my passion, but if you ask me what my profession is, I'd say: 'love'. Continuing to love, continuing to do things I love, continuing to be a part of the human race in love, and wanting to do things that reflect love.
HAPPY PLACES I've spent most of my life in the United States, but I regularly go back to Jamaica. Right now I'm living in Hong Kong [on a promotional tour for the House of Marley]. But I have come to understand that home is in your head, because where you are is where you are living, and every day is important. I'm currently living in Hong Kong, tomorrow I'll be living somewhere else and somewhere else the next day - I'm just happy to be alive. I learned from my father's music and from his legacy that you have to be close to the truth. And to know the truth, you have to live an exemplary life - you have to learn to love, to forgive, to be humble. You have to know that life is what you make it. I learned everything from my father's music: it's my breath, my life support. Every day I wake up and I live. Every day is an exodus. Every day I stir it up. Every day I'm jamming. Every day I get up, stand up for our rights. That's the meaning of 'Marley', that's what my father represents. A child must make his father proud - and how do you do this? You have to follow his teachings and enhance his teachings, because your father represents all fathers, a father is a father to all. It's important that we follow them, because what makes a father proud is seeing his sons and daughters being responsible and listening to what he says.
HONOUR THY FATHER Let me tell you something I'll always remember about my father. One day I was in the yard playing with my brother Stephen and these street kids came to see my father. It happened to be a Sunday, so we told them they couldn't come in. My father was watching us from upstairs and yelled out: 'Hey! Rohan and Steve! Come to me!' We went upstairs and he said: 'You see those boys you guys are keeping out? Let them in. And here's some money. Go buy them some ice cream and you watch them eat.' My father considered all children to be his children. And if you're one of Bob's children, you have to learn to love - a child has to follow in his father's footsteps.
ACTS OF GOD I'm never far from my father's legacy. I'm always with it. I'm continuing to move in that direction of love and peace, strength and unity for all mankind. I only want to continue what my father started. My philosophy is to treat one as you wish to be treated, to teach people what you have learned, to try to be god-like. I believe that God exists within man, and this means we should be responsible human beings and express love, teach love, show love, and be a manifestation of love. We all belong to the human race. Regardless of colour, creed and ethnicity, wherever I am, I am always with my brothers and sisters.
GROWING FONDER I also believe that one must grow with the times. Technology grows; this is the world we live in. People become accustomed to the things they see and the things they hear, so it's OK. But as long as you can do good within yourself, whether you have a cellphone, iPhone, or computer, if you can try and send a good message, then it's OK. You have to accept growth in the mind, and in creation and innovation, and you can't call one thing bad and another thing good, because these things are all relative.
WORK IN PROGRESS I'm most grateful for my life, my love, my unity, my father and my children. My plan for the future is to continue to grow in love, to continue to spread my father's message, to continue to evolve as a human being, to meet new people every day, and transcend the small things with an open mind.
