A HONG KONG man facing execution in Singapore is hopeful a petition for clemency submitted yesterday will be viewed with sympathy by the Singapore president, his lawyer said.

Daniel Chan Chi-pun, 38, was granted a surprise reprieve by President Ong Teng Cheong on the eve of his execution two weeks ago to write his petition.

His lawyer, Spencer Gwee, said Chan had written a four-page draft in Chinese, which he had helped polish.

The final 10-page document was delivered one day before the two-week stay of execution expired.

'It has taken him 20 hours to pen it. I think he has had difficulty assembling his thoughts,' Mr Gwee said.

Chan, who had always refused to put up his own petition feeling this would contradict his claim of innocence, changed his mind at the last moment.
