FAVOURITE characters from the fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will come on stage to provide a fun-filled musical romp through fairyland for a good cause tonight.

  The Christmas pantomime presented by the Hong Kong Players will kick off tonight at the Shouson Theatre in the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

  All proceeds from the opening night will go to to the Operation Santa charity fund that aims to provide more safe and caring day facilities for underprivileged children.

  The publicity manager for the Hong Kong Players, Kay McDonald, said pantomimes were aimed at children, so it seemed a good idea to give money to a children's charity.

  The month-long charity drive run by the South China Morning Post and RTHK Radio 3 aims to fund projects for the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children.

  The admission fee for the opening night is $120, while that for the remaining eight shows will be $150.

  Chairman David Hassey said the lower admission fee was to encourage more people to come to the opening night and to raise more money for the charity fund.

  Mr Hassey promised the characters would present an evening filled with jokes, songs, dance, stories and excitement for people of all ages and all walks of life.

  'Basically, it's for children. But I believe parents will enjoy it as much,' Mr Hassey said.

  The show promises to feature all the favourite characters - a sweet heroine, a brave hero, an indescribably wicked queen and a somewhat suspicious looking nurse.

  And there is also the occasional rabbit popping out of nowhere, a couple of bumbling henchmen, a talking mirror and, of course, seven perfectly matched dwarfs.

  Hong Kong Players have guaranteed a minimum donation of $20,000 collected from the performance for the appeal.

  The charity drive is hoping to raise $5 million to upgrade the society's existing services, which provide creche and day-care facilities for children under six.

  And don't forget: take a tram and raise fund for Operation Santa Claus.

   Hong Kong Tramways will donate this month's fares on the red open-topped antique tram emblazoned with Operation Santa Claus banners to the charity.

  The Victoria-style tram No 128 travels between Western Market and North Point and is running until the end of December.
