THE Legal Department has promised the family of Elaine Luk Yee-ling - who was chloroformed, sexually assaulted and killed - to take into ''very serious consideration'' their request for a review of her killers' sentences.

The victim's 55-year-old father, Luk Pak-luen, yesterday handed in a three-page letter at the Attorney-General's office.

Mr Luk, accompanied by solicitor Albert Ho Chun-yan, demanded that Attorney-General Jeremy Mathews appeal against the sentences, which Mr Luk claimed were too lenient.

Mr Ho said a department official said Mr Mathews had paid close attention to the case and would seriously consider whether the authorities should appeal.

Hon Leung-fong, Elaine Luk's summer job boss, and colleague Phoebe Wong Yim-ping, were given 81/2 and seven-year jail sentences respectively for the manslaughter of the 21-year-old Baptist College student.

With the help of Wong, Hon lured Luk to a hotel where she was chloroformed and videotaped while being sexually assaulted.

Joseph Cheung Sai-cheong, a spokesman for the Legal Department, said the department had been considering the possibility of appealing even before the family's request.
