THE rape and murder of a Baptist College student has been turned into a Category III film, angering her family and friends.

The movie, The Sweet Smell of Death, is scheduled for release after the trial of two men charged with killing Elaine Luk Yee-ling. The trial begins in August.

A poster for the film, produced by the Suen Woo Film Production Company, shows Category III film star and former Miss Hong Kong contestant Ng Mui-yee in the role of 21-year-old Luk.

She was killed on July 24 last year at the Royal Park Hotel in Sha Tin. Hon Leung-fong, 32, and Wong Yim-ping, 28, are jointly charged with the crime.

This week, her former school friends and teachers called for the Chinese-language film to be banned. Furious relatives were too distressed to talk.

One classmate, Winnie Ngai, said: ''I am very angry. This film should be banned. Her family has not yet recovered from the tragedy.'' Lecturer Dr Lam Chok-man was worried the film would sensationalise the case. ''This will make the family even more distressed,'' he said.

The film's director, William Wong Ying-kit, admitted exploiting the case but said he had considered the feelings of relatives.
