Hui-yi asks: Is it true that some fruits like durian are fattening?
Wynnie says: Fruits are generally low in fat and calories but packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytochemicals. These nutrients are needed to keep you in good health.
Like most foods, fruits can contribute to weight gain if you eat a lot of them with desserts and other sugary products. For example, too many servings of banana ice cream sundae, or strawberries with cream won't help.
Most fruits are low in calories. Some - such as melons, watermelons, papayas, grapefruits, oranges, tangerines, pineapples, apricots and peaches - are very low in calories. These contain 40-50 calories for 100 grams of each fruit. Some fruits contain more calories, for example, 100 grams of banana contribute around 100 calories; 100 grams of avocado contain 170 calories and 100 grams of durian provide around 150 calories.
For most durian lovers, a 100g serving simply isn't enough. The usual indulgence is more likely to be one cup (357g). This would provide around half the recommended daily amount of carbohydrates.
Too many carbs can increase your risk of weight gain just as easily as too many calories and fat in your diet.
