I have come across many software random generators in my lifetime. It seems one can write an entire history of them and it would reveal the zeitgeist of each period in which a particular software program appears.

In the 1980s, there was a brilliant generator parodying endless run-on sentences then prevalent among humanities academics in North America mimicking French postmodernist writing style, which was then all the rage. Last year, someone wrote a Dan Brown generator, which comes up with complete plots and storylines full of dark conspiracies and religious overtones.

But the funniest I have come across is one that has only been recently put up. The random recipe generator truly takes the cake, so to speak. Every time you visit the site, it generates a recipe for you.

Here are some examples: dry onion soup. Ingredients: one packet of dry onion soup mix; 10ml soy sauce; 70ml white wine vinegar; 10ml hot pepper sauce; 40 grams ginger. Instructions: pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius; slice the packets of dry onion soup mix; saut? the packets of dry onion soup mix; stir-fry the soy sauce; slice the white wine vinegar; barbecue the ginger; discard the onions. Bake for 70 minutes and serve hot. Dry soup? It's almost Zen-like - like clapping with one hand.

How about red onion creme br?l?e? You will need: four spring onions, 20ml brandy, five red onions, 130 grams basmati rice, 130ml water. Instructions: Saut? the brandy; lightly fry brandy; discard brandy; defrost the basmati rice; fry the water until browned; flamb? the water; saut? the water; fry the red onions until browned; heat the red onions; whisk the spring onions; enjoy. Don't like that? Try anchovies creme br?l?e.

Many recipes made me laugh till my stomach hurt. The site is at: jamesoff.net/site/fun/random-recipe-generator. Hey, Gordon Ramsey, take that.
