The boyfriend of a jailed former Hang Seng Bank manager was convicted yesterday for laundering more than HK$144.63 million that his girlfriend had taken from her clients' accounts.

He had claimed he did not know where the money came from.

Convicting Jason Chan Chun-sing for money laundering in the District Court yesterday, Deputy Judge Sham Siu-man rejected his testimony, and that of Chan's former girlfriend, Cheuk Sau-yee, ruling that she was not a credible witness.

Cheuk, 31, was jailed in July for six years and eight months after pleading guilty to 17 counts of theft from the accounts of clients including former Miss Hong Kong contender Chingmy Yau Suk-ching, illustrator Ma Wing-shing and Wheelock Properties director Wong Kwong-yiu.

Chan, a former customer manager at BNP Paribas, pleaded not guilty last month to his role.

Prosecutor Margaret Yu Kwok-wai told the court that Cheuk deposited HK$144,633,108 from 10 of her clients' account into an account Chan had opened on January 26, 2007, at Hang Seng Bank.
